THE POPULARIZATION OF ORIGINAL PRODUCTIONS ABOUT TRUE CRIMES THROUGH THE NETFLIX STREAMING PLATFORM

With the arrival of streaming services and the adaptation of real crimes to them, this study sought to identify the main trends of original productions about real crimes by the streaming platform Netflix, between 2018 and 2022. For this, exploratory-descriptive research with quantitative and qualitative approaches was carried out. Thus, 152 Netflix productions about real crimes were found, mostly films and documentary series that deal with topics such as: massacres and attacks, disappearances, drugs, robberies and scams, sexual crimes, murders, serial killers. The platform has been producing about crimes that happened not only in the USA, but also in several countries, whether old or more recent cases. Furthermore, these productions have received important awards and/or nominations, such as Emmys and Golden Globes. With this, it is concluded that Netflix has become one of the main references in productions about true crimes, a role that in the past was played by television and print media.
