Serialized Television Fiction Formats in Transnational and Transcultural Contexts

Abstract

The paper discusses the format within debates on the production, distribution, and circulation of television products on streaming services. We consider the current moment, characterized by globalization-localization processes of content, to discuss the transnationalization of serialized formats. We analyze the format as a concept, cultural technology, and commercial strategy based on Netflix's original productions available in the Brazilian catalog until 2023. We conclude that formats are important components of internationalization, but we question whether the wide availability of content from different origins necessarily results in greater diversity of social, aesthetic, and geopolitical approaches, since transcultural understanding requires a certain level of standardization.
