MODES OF REPRESENTATION OF HIV/AIDS IN THE DOCUMENTARY QUEER IN THE UNITED STATES (1980/1990)

Abstract

The present work intends to investigate the forms of representation of HIV/AIDS in the queer documentary in the United States, a country that already came from a period of strong political mobilization regarding the rights of identity groups, which generated a specific documentary production, beginning in the 1970s, aligned with the militant ideals of “gay liberation”. In the context of advancement, dissemination and deaths from HIV/AIDS, New Queer Cinema appears in the cinema, a cinematographic movement made up of LGBTQIA + directors who also aim to offer answers and promote debate in relation to the health crisis, through films that they defied aesthetic rules and had a strong political content. This research focuses on queer documentaries, bringing films together into three broad categories: “videoactivism”, “HIV / AIDS as an identity” and “HIV / AIDS as a political overflow of subjectivity”.

Author Biographies

Gilberto Alexandre Sobrinho, Universidade Estadual de Campinas - Unicamp

Professor e realizador vinculado ao Instituto de Artes da UNICAMP. Fez os estudos de graduação e mestrado em Letras na UNESP e o doutorado em Multimeios na UNICAMP. Professor no curso de graduação em midialogia e nos programas de pós-graduação em Mutimeios e Artes Visuais. Atualmente realiza pesquisa sobre a obra artística e o pensamento de Abdias Nascimento. Dirigiu e produziu os documentários Diários de Exus (2015), A Dança da Amizade, Histórias de Urucungos, Puítas e Quijengues (2016), Um pouco de tudo, talvez (2018) e A mulher da Casa do Arco-Íris (2018). Junto à TV Unicamp, realizou a série AMÉFRICA.TV, série de entrevistas sobre arte e cultura negra e ameríndia. Publicou os livros O Autor Multiplicado: um estudo sobre os filmes de Peter Greenaway (Alameda), organizou Cinemas em Redes: tecnologia, estética e política na era digital (Papirus) e co-organizou os livros Televisão: formas audiovisuais de ficção e documentário, volumos II e III (SOCINE).

Caio Curtolo, UNICAMP

28 anos, graduado em Comunicação Social – Midialogia, UNICAMP. Suas principais áreas de interesse são pesquisas em cinema, cinema documental, novas mídias e suas intersecções com os chamados movimentos identitários. Possui duas iniciações científicas em que investiga o documentário queer nos Estados Unidos, das suas bases ao seu engajamento político durante a crise de HIV/AIDS no país.
