Resumo

Feedback loops take place when the output of a system is fed back into its input, and the emergent results of this connection can be surprising and interesting as seen in video feedback art. I build here on the idea of “strange loops” developed from mathematics, neuroscience and philosophy to think about consciousness. Strange loops can be observed between the brain and mind, between the individual and society, and between thinking and doing in design. As one looks for their essence, we cross between levels of abstraction to find ourselves back where we started. I use this metaphor to define creative loops and apply them to critically examine how theory and practice co-exist in design education and research. The paper closes with two strategies to integrate theory and practice in design: by combination and by chunking.

Ricardo Sosa, AUT University

Kia ora! I have 20 years of experience in design research, teaching, and practice. My interests can be grouped around the creative and critical design of technology. My work spans across disciplines and methods, and I have published research outputs with over seventy co-authors. I am passionate about working with other specialists to pursue ethical impact in society through creative ideas and responsible uses of technology. My teaching has been recognised by students and colleagues in multiple countries and educational contexts. I strive to uphold and work with others to jointly meet the obligations in the Treaty of Waitangi. I promote creative entrepreneurship in students and nurture partnerships with industry and community groups. I work to consolidate a paradigm for design-based and student-centred education that nurtures the role of universities in Aotearoa as critic and conscience of society.
