DISCURSIVE ETHOS IN A TECNOGENRE
A MAYOR ON AN INSTAGRAM REEL

This article examines how political actors construct self-images on digital platforms, focusing on a reel published on the official Instagram profile of a Municipality in Brazil. Drawing on the interface between Discourse Analysis from an enunciative-discursive perspective and Digital Discourse Analysis, the study investigates the discursive mechanisms through which Eduardo Braide (mayor of the state capital São Luís – MA and the highest-rated municipal manager among Brazilian state capitals in 2025) legitimizes political authority within a digitally native technogenre. The analysis demonstrates that, in a non-electoral context, the construction of political ethos occurs predominantly through shown ethos encompassing corporality, gesture, occupation of public space, and multisemiotic articulation, rather than through explicit verbal arguments. The scenography of a technical construction site visit emerges as a central device of discursive legitimation, producing effects of competence, proximity, and accountability without resorting to the formal genres of institutional communication. The findings contribute to the understanding of new regimes of political visibility and of the strategies through which public managers build credibility in digital environments.
