Mobility and activism: new strategies in the fight against the hegemonic State
Keywords:
State, mobility, activismAbstract
The use of mobile devices has been a key strategy in activist events involving demonstrations and other kinds of social movements all over the world. Its utilization was evident in the media´s repeated publication of pictures taken on demonstrators´ mobile phones during the actions that have overthrown heads of State in Tunisia and Egypt in early 2011. In other countries where the State controls intensely the access of the population to information, like in Cuba, these technologies support practices of resistance and also work as an alternative to information access. In both cases, mobility provides a regeneration of strategies of attack that have long been used in rebellious actions against the State. Other important contributions of these technologies are the speed at which information is shared, the increased geographical extension of the actions and its capacity of persuading the audience by means of different strategies. The intelligence by which mobile devices has been used shows a new condition that challenges the State control, many times still organized under the eyes of centralized power.Downloads
