A critical analysis of the GamesBR 2004 edict for the understanding of the Brazilian electronic game market

Abstract

The 2004 GamesBr announcement is a landmark in the videogame industry in Brazil, and reflects several marketing, economic and social problems that go back to the 1980s market reserve. This article is based on a critical analysis of the 2004 GamesBR announcement, a mechanism of incentive to the production of games in national territory by the federal government, to carry out a reflection on the gaming industry in Brazil and in the world. In order to contextualize the edict and reinforce its importance, this article addresses the formation of the electronic games industry in the country, and its trajectory until the announcement of the announcement, at which time the Brazilian industry was strongly weakened. Based on this historical and contextual analysis, the edict is analyzed in its regulations, in the projects approved and in the results obtained by it, concluding with a survey of problems and failures occurred in the conception and execution of this and suggestions for future competitions.
